I buy vintage tablecloths whenever they are cheap and somewhat cute and then I just sit on them knowing that SOME day I will find a good use for them.  

Remember the tablecloth I cut up for my Grandparents hometown sesquicentennial party???  I had the pleasure of using those again at the 4th... only this time Anaïs got to wear the baby dress and Julliette got to wear Amélie's.  It was so cute and devastatingly heartwarming to be able to use them again.

Months ago I found this "pin" of jeans cut off with fabric attached to make a skirt-- I don't even think I pinned it, I just thought, "I HAVE to do that!"  

Time passed.

And then I got a bur up my butt (on the day of my BIL's birthday party no less) and decided to "throw" together matching skirts for my girls.  They are terribly made yet terribly cute and my sweet babes are so gracious and excited to wear anything their Momma makes them.

I won't bore you with technical sewing details because there aren't any.  As usual I adopted my policy of "fake it 'til you make it."  And I done made me some cute skirts.

Here's my killer directions...

I took two old pairs of jeans, cut them at the butt, just above the crotch.   (The photo looks like I cut them lower but I cut higher after I took the photo).  I took the tablecloth and measured from the length of the freshly cut jeans to just at the girl's ankles and cut accordingly then sewed the ends together.  I basted the top of the cut tablecloth and then pulled the thread to gather the fabric a bit.  Right sides together... et voila!

I hate to pass up the chance to use the salvage edge of fabric.  It saves so much time.

These little babies have character.  

Little holes in the fabric and everything.

They aren't Momma's personal style but I may just have to make myself one.

The Red Lace Dresses Part Two (sort of)

It's 12:09 a.m.

IF I had a baby who understood the concept of sleeping without a boob in her mouth (yes, I just said that) THEN I would be done AND I would have time to BLOG about it.  I NEVER get to blog.  But I swear I'll be back strong as soon as possible.  I miss my blog.  One down, three to go.  Did I mention I am hosting Christmas?  When I say "crazy" you say "maybe".

Red Lace? Um, Oui S.V.P.

One thing Amélie and I LOVE to do together is watch fashion shows.  When I got my "September Issue" I was so enchanted by the red lace dresses Dolce and Gabanna were showing I had to check out the show.

It was amazing!!!!!!!!! (as mentioned on FB)

The whole thing just blew my mind and my sweet girl who I am trying to raise "unplugged from the culture" - aside from wanting to groom her to have good taste... which I suppose is some sort of oxymoron if you are trying to raise a sheltered child... sigh... well, anyways half way during the show, in between her "oos and ahs" she said, with her hand pressed against her little heart, "I'm feeling a little jealousy in my heart right now Mom."

Oops.

Nice job Mom.

Way to teach your daughter to covet.

Anyways, I don't know if I will have enough of a figure by Christmas to want to make one for myself but my daughters as SO WEARING red lace for Christmas.  I am PRAYING JoAnn's has something that's not totally gauche and hideous.  I am not in the mood to hunt around online.  Remember the ordeal when I just wanted some "fricken plaid taffeta" a couple years ago?

Two years ago I made the taffeta dresses and skirt for myself - I don't think I ever showed you the Catherine Herrera inspired skirt - it was awesome but it's on another hard drive so still no photo.  Last year I wore my favorite top I bought in Paris ten years ago.  It's so amazing I will never get rid of it.  It's my go-to drama piece.

 I look so dear-in-the-headlights.  What you can't see is the moving boxes stacked to the ceiling on the other side of the room.  That, and the growing, shocker baby in my belly!!!

 
Anyways - are your thoughts turning to the holiday ensembles you will be putting together?

OH look - in searching for a photo of that skirt I found our Easter pics from this year - big belly or not, I love navy and white.  See - you just gotta dress up!  It's so fun!!!

She's Sew Chic - Prairie Style Couture.

We are on our second round of reading the "Little House on the Prairie" series in our home  We began our first round when Aidan was 4 (he is now 5), thinking, maybe he would like it.  Little did we know the pioneer life would completely capture his imagination at such a young age.  When we finished reading all nine books he insisted that we start all over the next day.

Farmer Boy is my personal favorite and if you have not read the books as an adult I HIGHLY recommend them.  They are amazing, inspiring and rather romantic when Laura and Almanzo are courting.

Ma's ingenuity is very inspiring too.  She did so much with so little.  She was constantly making small dresses out of worn large ones and then curtains out of faded scraps...and she was the inspiration behind these little dresses that I designed for my girls for their "Summer 2010 Collection"... out of an old picnic tablecloth that we never used.  

 Red, white and blue cotton with the salvage edge.

Trés chic.  

Very Prairie.

It doesn't hurt that these chickens are beyond words precious!!!!
