This Bud's For Ju!

LADIES!
START - YOUR - ENGINES!!!!

OK, I think I have ONE reader who will give me an "Amen" here but,

It's that time again! Time to plug in the TV once a week...The long, but thank the Lord it's only three months season without NASCAR is over!
Tomorrow is the Budweiser Shootout!
The "Parisienne" side of me will take a back seat as I enjoy this petal to the metal shootout for a million dollars!

Laugh all you want.
I LOVE NASCAR!
The sounds, the smells, the jumpsuits, the drivers!
YEE-HAW!!!

Joel has been working tons of hours again since his little baby break and we are desperate to hang out together as a family. Rumor has it that extended family may be dropping by...they're gonna have to put up with us as we kick off the NASCAR season. Aidan will probably have his jumpsuit on and he is VERY concerned that the baby doesn't have anything "88" to wear...in fact, we are all due for a little Amp/National Guard gear around here! All I have is my gorgeous red leather Bud jacket...boohoo. I can't hardly wear it anymore, it makes me so sad...wearing a green Mountain Dew Amp jacket just won't feel as cool!

If you hear me scream, it's cause Junior won! We think he is going to have a much better season this year and if he doesn't, that's OK too. We love "Ju" no matter what!

This Bud's for Ju!

A Girl's Review of the Daytona 500

Dearest Junior,
How do we love thee?  Let us count the ways...

No, seriously.  Junior was smokin' yesterday in case you missed it.  We were praying the rain back and rocking to Keith Urban, Junior took the lead, we popped open a beer and then it started.  Like the dark rain clouds rolling into Daytona things just kept getting worse for Junior.  From a pit-road re-do he made his way all the back up to 5th only to pit again and park his right front tire a HAIR on the white line of his pit box.  Why in the world his team didn't catch the error and tell him to move before even TOUCHING a tire or jack is beyond me but some NASCAR official went nuts pointing out the rubber on white and Junior got sent to the back of the pack, a lap down but NOT before a crew member shoved the official out of the way so he could do his job.  It was hilarious!!!!!
It got worse.  Vying for the "lucky dog" position with rain on the horizon Brian Vickers and Jr. were racing hard, Vickers bumped him down off the track and Junior attempted to get back in line, wrecking Vickers (ha!) and a ton of other drivers, making his way through the smoke and flying turf like a scene out of a movie- I was screaming!!!!
Everyone in the booth got their knickers in a knot, blaming Junior for the wreck, saying he turned right into Vickers.  What a load!  People whining that he turned right into his rear quarter panel.  What a bunch of babies and if they had not noticed: Junior doesn't wreck people, at least on purpose.  I've seen Tony Stewart "turn" into other drivers for real a thousand times.  The announcers said Junior should have tried to "blend" into the traffic.  For a moment their I thought I was at a BeautiControl convention learning a new eye shadow technique!  BLEND????  Are they joking??  And you know what, those announcers should know better.  They are the ones who actually got to race like real men, bumping when they needed to and throwing punches when things didn't go right.  For them to "re-state" the rules made me want to puke.  Maybe they should make a cute little list and tape it to the safer-barrier and give each driver a gold sticker or smiley face for being safe and courteous!!!!
Anyways, you be the judge.  Rain came and the race was called.  My poor family, I was pretty cranky for a couple hours but I can't wait til next week!!!!!
Love you Ju!!!!!!

Today in the Kitchen - NASCAR Gourmet! Beef Roast with Red Onion Sauce and Reine de Saba (Queen of Sheba Chocolate Cake)

MY JUNIOR!!!!

No one has ever celebrated the beginning of the long awaited NASCAR season like this - I promise! Gramma and Grandpa joined us for the feast and celebration of our family obsession!
The only T.V. he knows!!!  He is so into it - it is beyond adorable!!!

No beer and pizza tonight (or Saturday night as it were).  For a night race (the Budweiser Shootout) and the celebration of a long winter without Junior being over I decided to set the table and celebrate in style!  (Summer Sunday races are for my homemade pizza and I promise that recipe will come.) No, we don't make homemade beer...yet.  And my apologies, the meat looked SO GOOD we dove in without remembering to take a photograph for the blog! I did take this photo of Aidan's centerpiece that he and I made for the table!

This is a long post on account of the photos and directions but either one of these recipes are sure to "wow" your family and are a great addition to your repertoire.

Côte de Beouf Compote d'Oignon
Beef Rib with Onion Sauce

This is the photo from the cookbook - I still can't believe I forgot to take my own!!!
VERY EASY!
Here I will give you the recipe straight out of my favorite cookbook but will mention that I purchased a tip roast instead of the suggested cut of meet.  I did followed the cooking method below but not the cooking times as my cut of meat was much bigger.  (I will mention other variations I made throughout) I "eyeballed" it by cutting it in the middle while flipping it in the skillet before moving it to the oven.  I prefer my red meat more rare than well done and have been known to get the nod of approval by the waiter when ordering my steak "á point" in France or at the local French bistro.

You will  need:
1 Beef rib with bone, about 2 1/2 pounds well trimmed of fat
1 tsp crushed black peppercorns (I used multi-colored and much more than that.  I am a peppery  kind of girl!)
1 tbsp course sea salt (can't live without it)
4 tbsp unsalted butter

For the sauce-
1 large red onion (I used about 1.5)
1/2 cup fruity red wine (Sent Big Daddy out for cheap fruity wine, he came back with Boons Farm carbonated Sangria...the recipe still came out OK and we got a good laugh!)
2 tbsp red currant jelly or seedless raspberry preserves
1/4 tsp dried thyme
2-3 tbsp Olive Oil
salt and freshly ground pepper

Wipe the beef with a damp paper towel.  Mix the crushed peppercorns and salt and press onto both sides of the meat coating it completely.  Cover lightly and let sit for 30 minutes.

Melt 2 tbsp of the butter in a saucepan over medium heat add the onion and cook until softened then add the wine, broth, jelly and thyme and bring to a boil.  Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 30-35 minutes until the liquid has evaporated.  Season with salt and pepper and keep warm.

Preheat the oven to 425, melt the remaining butter with the oil in a large heavy oven proof frying pan or in a large flameproof casserole over high heat.  Add the meat and cook for 1-2 minutes until browned, turn and cook for another 1-2 minutes.  (Again, I flipped mine probably 4 or 5 times because my cut of meat was really thick I was nervous there was no way it was going to get done.)  Immediately place the pan or casserole in the oven and roast for 8-10 minutes.  Transfer the beef to a board and cover for 10 minutes.  With a knife, loosen the meat from the rib bone an then carve into thick slices.  (I dumped the juice from the pan onto my platter - we dipped our bread in it - amazing!!!!)

Queen of Sheba Chocolate Cake
Reine de Saba Gâteau Chocolat

For the cake:
2/3 cup blanched almonds (I blanched my own)
2/3 cup super fine sugar
1/4 cup flour (rice flour for gluten free)
1/2 cup unsalted butter
5 ounces semi-sweet chocolate (I like 70-ish %) melted
3 eggs, separated
2 tbsp almond liqueur (Amaretto)

For the chocolate glaze:
3/4 cup heavy cream (I used whipping cream, is this the same thing???)
8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate (I did 6 onces at 71% and 2 ounces of 100%)
2 tbsp unsalted butter
2 tbsp almond liqueur
chopped toasted almonds to decorate (chop in Cuisinart or smash up and toast in a dry skillet)
with non stick baking paper and dust with flour (I did not have the paper and mine came out great)
Process almonds and two tablespoons of the sugar in a food processor with the metal blade until very fine, transfer to a bowl and sift over the flour.  Stir to mix and set aside.   Melt chocolate in a double boiler, once melted add the egg yolks one at a time, mixing after each and then add the amaretto.

Bake for 30-35 minutes until the edge is puffed but the center is still soft and wobbly - a skewer inserted about 2 inches from the edge should come out clean.  Transfer the cake in it's pan to a wire rack (a trivet on my counter would have to do - I don't have a wire rack).  Allow to cool for 15 minutes, then remove the sides.  Invert the cake onto an 8 inch cake board (or three pink paper plates cut up and taped together - HA!), remove the base of the pan and paper.

To make the chocolate glaze, bring the cream to a boil in a saucepan.  Remove from the heat and add the chocolate.  Stir in gently until chocolate had melted and its smooth, then beat in the butter and liqueur.  I did not removed mine from the heat and I did not stir the chocolate enough as it was melting.  My glaze turned into a congealed disaster (to the right) and I had to scrap it and start all over.  (Properly made, left) Thankfully I had enough chocolate and an extra cream in the fridge!!!
Cool for about 20-30 minutes until it has slightly thickened, stirring occasionally.

Place the cake on a wire rack (or an upside down bowl as I did, with a brown paper bag beneath!)  Pour the warm chocolate glaze to cover the top completely.
It may drip down on the sides, that's good, just take a spatula and add more to the sides of the cake to complete.  Let it stand for a few minutes and then gently press the crushed almonds onto the sides of the cake.
This cake can be made ahead of time and well, wrapped will last in the fridge for 3 days.
Stay tuned for another take on this recipe I thought of the other night while falling asleep, I may take a stab at it for Valentines Day.

So, if that is not a great way to start the NASCAR season I don't know what it...oh yes I do...JUNIOR taking the checkered flag at the Daytona 500 next weekend!!!

Bon Appetit!!!

2011 update!  Just found two wire wracks at the Thrift Store...  WOO-HOO!  AND, I fixed all the mistakes in this recipe - so sorry to those of you who tried it and were like, "What the heck is this girl smokin'?"

While my Farm Wedding Photos are Loading...

Let me tell you that
JUNIOR WON AT MICHIGAN YESTERDAY!!!!!!

Driving home from the wedding we tuned in for the race, what a great way to end this weekend. We pulled over at an Oasis to pee and finish out the race, pounding on the dashboard, "go Junior, go Junior!!!" What an unbelievable finish, I almost peed my pants, what a risk and strategey. I cried, I wish I could have seen it!!!! Thank God for You Tube. The victory was just as sweet today.

THIS PARISIENNE FARMGIRL LOVES JUNIOR!
I hope he partied at least half as hard as we did this weekend...footage and photos to come!

The Win that Was Not

It has been a LONG time since I blogged about Junior.
Don't worry, I still hold him in great affection! In fact, in this house we think he is greater than ever even if he is no longer driving that beautiful red car. No, we are not switching to Mountain Dew Amp! This is still a Bud house.
Junior (in case you wanted to know) is having a ROCKIN season, even without a win. As you can see on my NASCAR widget on the right, he is in third place. He is making his team mates (and it pains me to say that word!) #48 and #24 look pretty sad.
This past weekend I had tears of joy in my eyes as with 5 laps to go it looks like "Ju" as Aidan calls him was finally going to win a race until that twit Busch snatched my hopes or should I say wrecked my hopes...I was with family so I tried to maintain a shred of dignity. Had I been at home just me and my boys I probably would have needed to wash my mouth out with soap- that or make a run to the store for Kleenex.
Call me strange (I have NO friends that can even tolerate NASCAR) but I love those races and the off season (Nov-Feb) is very long for me. I could not explain the rules of football to anyone but I can tell you a bit about bump drafting, down force, tire wear and being either too loose or too tight! Did you know there is even an organization of French NASCAR fans (even though now I can not find the link...errrrrrrr? When I was in France I tried to watch the races at some of the bars in my Quatier but stupid husbands whose wives were out hittin' the Champs Elysées had to monopolize the English viewing with "March Madness." Talk about mad!
I am sure there was many a P-ed off red neck Saturday night. I was one of them...
Any weekend now he is going to smoke those tires in a victory burn out...you will probably hear me scream all the way to Paris!!!!

Mon Toutou.

Moms of sons, have you experienced moments with your son that were for lack of a better word - romantic?

I have noticed throughout the last two years that I have had moments with my P.R. that have been truly romantic. Sunday morning was unexpectedly one of them.

Joel had to work on Sunday which is not a typical thing in our house - weekends let alone Sundays are sacred but then again so are vacations and we have not taken one more than four days longs since our big Paris vacation three years ago.

(Six weeks for me and two for Joel in Paris really should last one about a decade but when you work as hard as Joel does you long to not only put your brush down but go without looking at it for at least a week.)

En tout cas we need every centime - when you are self employed there is no paid vacation unless you pay for it.

What a treat - I got to sleep in for the first time in months rolled out of bed a little before 9am and by 9:45 had bathed the babes and we were on our way to church with me doing my makeup at stop lights. Superwoman.

Aidan has been sitting with us in big church but as of last week he wanted to go in with the big kids (3-5) and they let him - well two thirds into the service his number flashed on the screen so I went down to rescue him. He just wanted his Momma. It was about 120 degrees in his room - I would not want to play in there either. Both of us were sweating like crazy by the time we made it back to "big church." He sat really good and quiet for about ten minutes but he started to sqirm and talk loudly about my "rouge" beads on my necklace so I thought we'd better go - pastor had only one more point to make anyways.

We go to church in a nearby town that has a beautiful historic square and I thought why go home? NASCAR was on cable so I would have had to listen to the radio anyways, it was about 90 degrees out but too close to naptime to head to the beach - we were going on a date.

Within minutes we were parking on a brick street on the square and window shopping. I remembered the hobby shop. What would be more fun for my little guy than to watch the model trains run in all their glory? He stood transfixed for a good ten minutes as we watched them go round and round thru their little towns, carnivals and mountains. We were admiring a red and black set when I realized we were watching a number 8 engine go round - then I look again. The whole dang train was Dale Junior. It fits the scale size than my Dad has been collecting for Aidan - a "mere" $269.00 for the set. I want it SO BAD!!! They have two left. Do you know how special that would be to have when in a few months our precious number Eight Bud car will be no longer? Ugh, I can't even thing about it. (Now accepting donations)

We still had the store to ourselves when I realized Aidan could probably handle the slot cars since there were no big boys around. I took a little grocery money and rented him a car, a handle and 15 minutes.

What a joy! The kid tore it up - did not crash once and the look in his eyes was pure elation. He is obsessed with driving (I now have to keep my cars doors locked in the driveway as I have more than once found him jerking the steering wheel back and forth, flashers flashing, window wipers going...). I found myself sitting in my dress on this filthy hobby shop floor staring at my son's face - we might as well have been riding in Cinderella's carriage for me.

When his 15 minutes were done the car came to a stop and Aidan instantly burst into tears. I quickly ordered another round. This time he lasted about 10 minutes and then wanted to go back and forth between watching the trains and racing and this time when our time was up we left for a little more window shopping. The second round was free - the owner saying that Aidan was better behaved than all the other boys that come in.

After a bit we walked to the middle of the square, classical music piped throughout the air Aidan kept saying, "I see it?" trying to find the source of the music, expecting lived musicians hiding somewhere in the park.

There was a bench with a few "ol lady" as Aidan would say and each time we passed them they would comment to each other on the beautiful little boy with his head full of curls. I must admit he was especially darling on Sunday. Clean blond curls, daddies colonge, navy and white striped shorts with his darling navy sandels and a red polo. Passing them again he made eye contact with them and hid his face, I was carrying him so I turned him around to say hello to them when one with more vigor then I ever thought she could muster one ol' lady JUMPED up and said, "I''l take your picture!" She whipped out a poleroid and snapped our photograph and that was when I about lost it. These moments alone with Aidan are so precious. Very soon my attention will be divided and sooner than I realize attention will be divided between friends, hobbies and finally adulthood. I won't be able to lift him into my arms or watch his eyes light up over a silly slot car forever. (Ok, now I am sobbing...)

Finally it was time to come home, we ate some lunch together and took our aftenoon naps; Joel came home just as we were waking up and we decided to go on a walk together.

Aidan loves to run around the block but this time half way around it began to sprinkle. There was no thunder so Joel did not freak out (after our tree getting stuck last year he is more cautious than EVER!) so there we were en famille running around the block, back home as fast as we could in pouring, pouring rain! Neighbors setting out their thirsty hanging baskets invited us to take shelter on their porch but we ran on. So romantic.

Finally to our own porch Joel escaped inside and Aidan and I played Legos and tried to empty out his wagon as sheets of the heaviest, most humid rain I have ever felt assailed us. We were giggling with delight.

Twenty minutes passed and the sky began to clear to which Aidan looked up and yelled to the heavens, "More!" but the following sprinkles did nothing to recapture the moment. The day was over and evening bedtime was fast approaching.

Whispering, "Bon soir mon Toutou." I knew I had fallen in love with my son a thousand times again that day. I wonder how I will contain myself when I am eighty, out in my garden and the heavens open and I remember this special Sunday with my son.

By the way...SOBBING again.

I have photos us us soaked out in the rain but I will put them on tonight - I need my nap now!

JUNIOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't tell me it's not a sport.
Don't ask me how I can watch cars go 'round and round for 3 hours.

NASCAR is back and the long wait between Miami in November and Daytona in February is over. It's Speed Week! There is something cruel and unusual about the most boring part of the year (winter) c0insiding with the break into between Nascar seasons but hallelujah...the wait is over!

I LOVE NASCAR!

And pardon me for saying that the art of getting your car "just right" for a particular track and then racing it with 41 other drivers at 185 m.p.h. is WAY more exciting then watching big fat men in spandex run up and down a field after a piece of pig skin.
Last night was the Budweiser Shootout - a 60 lap, balls out race for a million dollars (no points are applied to the season - it's just for the thrill of it).
Junior was smoking and then held steady around 8th place and with a quarter lap to go he was helping friend Elliot Sadler out with a little bump drafting and he got a little over-zealous and wrecked 'em both. No hard feelings between either of them.

Dale Earnhardt Junior is my FAVORITE driver and you only have to watch a few interviews or races to see why. He is just having fun. He is the most popular driver but the lack of ego is amazing. When he screws up he is the first to admit it while many other drivers will whine like little girls (Jeff and Jimmie and the Bush brothers) Junior takes it all in stride and if he does get ticked it's for good reason.

So, things are looking up (besides the snow storm expected for tomorrow)...in about 40 days my first flowers will start coming up and before I know it I will be in the garden with the race on the radio full blast on a scalding hot Sunday afternoon. -Hey- maybe Joel will take me to the Chicago race for my birthday.

In the meantime, laugh at me all you want. My love of racing is part of the enigma (see my Profile) . A knew #8 flag is gonna be flying on the Parisienne Farmhouse and I'm gonna be screamin'...

Dear (Sweet Baby) Jesus,

Today is race day. And our hero, our son of a legend, is running third in this years championship.
As you know in our house the Sunday afternoon race is serious family time. Please (Sweet Baby) Jesus, we just don’t think we could stand it if Jimmy Johnson wins today’s race. Please give Junior’s crew chief wisdom and protect Junior from stupid moves by other drivers. Please help Junior get a top three or better finish today and help him win the championship so we can fly our flag, jump around with happiness and hold our head high at the next family gathering.
Amen.
