The Queen of Clean

...I am not.
But I sure try.
Or die trying depending who you are asking.

A couple days after Christmas I found myself ready to be done with it all... and I usually keep up my decorations until the 6th or so... but this is such a new life for us with the little ones now schooling... I needed that "fresh slate"... a New Years free of pine needles and clutter.
As beautiful as it all is when you first set it up,
it's just as beautiful when you take it all down.
A place for everything and everything in it's place makes
Momma a very happy Parisienne Farmgirl indeed.

3 Down, So Many to Go!

What's worse?

A kitchen that looks like your life, lunch and laundry and everything in between exploded all over it (never mind the rest of the house)?
Or a phone call during the life, lunch, laundry (and I forgot to mention two naked children in the kitchen sink getting their baths, toes and fingernails cut and bangs trimmed) from a fellow blogger saying she was in the area and could we meet?

Hmmmm, let me guess.

Follow me here.

See, Mom and a friend had a big sale this weekend at this friends farmhouse about 12 minutes from here. And a fellow blogger was coming to Kankakee which is a good, good hike but we had talked about meeting since she would be within 100 miles-ish. I thought, if anything we would be meeting at the sale Friday night, I never saw her so I figured, understandably so, that two hours to come to a "sale" might be a bit much. Chicagoland traffic-n-all.

I get this call all the time from a weird number with and "8" in it. A few times between Friday night and Saturday morning I got a call from a number with that familiar "8" so - like a dumb butt, I ignored it.
Until JOEL'S phone rang Saturday during the life, laundry and lunch - it was my Mom, "_______ is here! (at the sale) and she wants you to pop on over!" Then it dawned on me, the similarity between the stalker, weird phone call number and this bloggers phone number!!!

"8"

What? No make up, still in pj's, trimming little toe nails and twenty minutes before naptime, life, lunch and laundry to be done, with hubby in the middle of a carpentry project - But what are you gonna say, "Sorry, babe. Next time?" I think not. So, I invited _____ and her gang over to the Parisienne Farmhouse. Hung up the phone and was like Cinderella on steroids! You never saw my gimpy, pregnant hips move so fast.

ALL HANDS ON DECK!!!

Hubby was ordered to put down the saw, homemade pizza mess cleaned up, kids we herded off to bed, hairs and toe nails cleaned up, bra and mascara put on, kitchen floor crud mopped, hmmm, ceiling fan blades are filthy with no time to clean them so turn it on (you can't see the dirt when it's going round and round), everyone's sheets were in the dryer so the beds had to get made...

All this for who you ask?

Why, the ever conservative, farm living, food growing, Congress calling, hilarious, NASCAR and Junior lovin'...JONI FROM OLD CENTENNIAL FARMHOUSE!!!!!

Oh my gosh, thankfully they first stopped for lunch or all my dirty secrets would have been known (as if they aren't now that I have told you why a stye my house was on Saturday afternoon!). I directed them into town and stood out in the driveway to wave them in - it was Joni, her darling sister Mary with the cool jeans, let's see, I believe her sister's two daughters and a friend! And let me tell you something - not only is Joni my kind of blogger - I could hang out with her all day! What a doll! She is JUST like she is on her blog and better! The chickens latched on to her right away, Aidan took her hand and in the most darling fashion gave her a tour of the house room by room, his legos and other creations and Amélie let her hold her like she was her Aunt or something!

L-R, Joni, Amélie, Moi, Aidan & Mary

When you come to my town you HAVE to visit at least one resale shop (we have so many) so, I call my friend who was getting ready to close up for the day and said we were coming over with a car load. It was fun and she had good stuff too! I hope Joni posts some of her finds.

Our visit was short and sweet but I must say, it was so wonderful to meet her, her sister (who I found out is a lurker on the P.F.) and the girls! So, here is the rule, no matter how crazy it is, or what I am in the middle of, I love impromptu guests from near or far - so Bloggerbeans, if you are in the area, have a layover at O'Hare or Milwaukee and would like to come over for a meal, cup of coffee or trip to a local resale shop - PLEASE let me know!!!!!! I have had the honor and meeting Homemaker Ang, Anne Marie and Joni of Old Centennial and...I would love to meet you too!

LE FRIGO EST LA!!!!!!

(Or should I say, "Le Frigo est arrivé"...oh my french...pitiful...)

When Momma's Happy
Everybody is Happy!

And let me tell you, this is a happy, happy house!

No more ice chunks, no more frozen lettuce, NO MORE DUCT TAPE!

What a mess to clean the old one all out while the delivery guys were putting that beautiful behemoth of a freezer in my garage. Oh my goodness, my kitchen looked like a war zone. After I got the old fridge emptied I gave it one more really good kick - that's just the kind of girl I am! They had to take the doors off and my front door off just to get that tank out of the house! Here is another photo in case you weren't convinced I needed a new one...notice the bottom of the freezer door!
LOL!!!!

And now, look at this lovely, sleek, efficient, SA-WANKY thang below!!!

Last night Joel Baby worked again til (It's 7 days a week 15+ hour days around here as we prepare for winter. Praising God for the work but missing our family time!) Anyways, I gave myself a break and watched Notting Hill on You Tube in 7 minute chunks and then at 9:30 got it in my craw to clean the house, so I did.

OH LA LA!!!!
Go ahead, open my fridge! There is no shame now!
Like you care - but here is a close up!
And of course the new freezer - part of the "Put Up or Shut Up" challenge.

It's Monday, wash is on the line, the house looks like that of a bonified Frey Girl*, any ice in the house is where it's supposed to be...I'm going out to the garden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

23 April 2009

Good Morning!

Quelle miracle!

It's 9:53 a.m. and I have managed, somehow to do the following:

-Prayed and read my Bible (a miracle in itself)
-enjoyed a cup of tea
-unloaded and loaded the dishwasher
-cleaned out the sink
-made my bed
-read to the kids
-got house "ready for the day" IE: picked up
-folded a load of laundry
-washed a load
-dried a load
-sqeeezed in a 30 minute workout

...and now I am off to the potager to spread compost and some manure with my chickens in tow.  We are going to plant our lettuces, radish and onions too.  Can't wait.  Photos to come at naptime.

If only every morning could be like this.  That would feel so incredible!

Lego my Legos

I would make a horrible atheist.  A thousand times a day I see the hand of God.  Lately I see it most at the play table.

Legos.
When was the last time you saw God in Legos?
No, there are no weeping Virgins appearing in the pile of yellow, red and blue bricks but there is a 3 1/2 year old angel who stands for hours and sings songs to himself as he creates.  Creative, just like his Maker.
He is so small and I know I am the Mom so everything he does is amazing but I have got to say, for someone so small the perseverance in sorting and sorting to find the right piece, the planning and patience, the attention span...it blows my mind.  We have two drawers full of thousands of pieces of hand-me-down Legos - this week his focus apparently has been "small parts" for he has managed to find all these little pieces that I did not know we had.  He makes "sidewalks"  "garages" "towers" and "rooms where Mom's and Dad's watch a Mom and Dad movie after the kid's are in bed."  (I keep telling him to just wait 'til we go to "Two Grams"* house and play with great Uncle Ron and John's Legos - THEY ARE THE BEST!)
Enter me.  I too love Legos.  In a really sick, maybe it's time to grow up sort of way.  I too can play FOR HOURS, abandoning all housework and food preparation, even going to the bathroom just to make something that I think is cool.  I have serious fantasies of going on Ebay and buying huge box lots of the really creative pieces - arches, roof angles, fences...the mind reels.
The other day Aidan and I were dreaming up what we could build when Aidan (who is more obsessed with the Eiffel Tower than I am) suggested we build our own, which led to Notre Dame, The Arch de Triumph and finally, Les Invalides.  I went nuts, I could not stop.  Sorting and sorting til I found pieces in our limited "inventory" to pull off something that resembled the Parisian monuments.  Then we got the crazy idea to take pictures of our masterpieces using a coffee table book of Paris as a backdrop.  Aidan is frighteningly becoming pretty handy with IPhoto and we had fun changing the photos to Sepia or Black and White.  Way, way to much fun.  I swear his creativity level is that of a 10 year old but I know, I am the adoring mother.  If I sent him off to pre-school how would we have time for crazy stuff like this???
Anyways, I thought you might like to see his work.

la tour eiffel
l'arc de Triumph
Notre Dame
les Invalides

Bon Vendredi.
Happy Friday.

*In case you are a new reader, "Two Grams" is what numerically obsessed Babes calls my Gramma, shortly after he came up with that he dubbed City Farmer "One Gram".
And don't worry Gramma, I know right where the box is in the Big House.

'Havin' a Lieutenant Dan Moment Here People!!!!

If you know me, I hope and pray you know me this way,

I AM NOT A WALLOWER.

I have my moments of depression but a long time ago I decided there was no time in life for wallowing. It's not Biblical, it's not productive. I chose to praise God DURING a miscarriage and while my son laid in a P.I.C.U. bed at 11 days old. It is VERY RARE for me to go more than a few hours feeling despondent over any circumstance no matter how bad a part of my life is SUCKING at the moment. After a good cry, rant or downright tantrum I pull myself up by my bootstraps, rebuke the devourer, make lemons into lemonade, whatever you want to call it and more often then not I will scream at "life" in my best Lieutenant Dan* voice,

"IS THAT ALL YOU'VE GOT!!!!?????"

Sometimes I will even throw in a little Fletcher Reede* and yell,

"HIT ME AGAIN IKE, AND THIS TIME PUT SOME STANK ON IT!"

That's just the way I roll.

But darned if that seems effective lately. Can I whine about money for a moment?

PRAISE GOD we "found" Dave Ramesy last year, praise GOD since doing so we have not gone ONE PENNY into debt! But darned if that seems to be making a difference!!!! Our health insurance has DOUBLED in the last 365 days - we are pushing close to a thousand dollars here people - I mean WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THAT???

And to heat this house???? We did not turn the heat on here until December 7th and I just got off the pay bill website to pay old man Nicor and after I clicked "Submit Payment" Joel said, "SHUT IT DOWN!"

That's right family, you thought it was cold in this old house at 62 degrees? Better bring an extra pair of socks and a bearskin. We'd rather have groceries thank you very much!

So, there is some ("shift") work now, we are not out buying new clothes on the weekends and if I want a bottle of wine the MAXIMUM is a $9 bottle - most of the time it's $5.99, I started shopping at Costco, EVEN ALDI for pete's sake, but alas there is STILL not enough money around here

AND IF I HEAR HILLARY OR EVEN WORSE OBAMA TALK ABOUT HOPE FOR AMERICAN WORKING FAMILIES I AM GOING TO BARF!!!

Any financial stress we are having is just that- stress WE are having. We are not victims. We could have have made better choices over the years even if in many cases we "did not know better" (and what a crock of poop that expression is - only a moron spends money he does not have and people, we were morons!) I will NEVER rely on Washington to bale me out and I will NEVER look to them to be the fixer of my problems.

God's Word says the diligent hand knows know lack! And if there is one thing my husband is (and there is MORE) it's diligent!

We will not crumble. Ten thousand may fall by my side but my hope is in the Lord. If children are a blessing from God then he is going to provide a way for us to provide for them. I will walk by faith and not by my checkbook balance.

Every job we have every gotten has been gift from God. Our home is a gift from God. That we were born in America - LAND OF MOTHER LOVIN' OPPORTUNITY is a gift from God and I think I've got a money making idea in the cooker that just might be a gift from God (and my mother) and while I am fighting tooth and nail I will stand on His word and scream at "Life" in my best Lieutenant Dan voice...

"IS THAT ALL YOU' GOT?????!!!!!!"

*Lieutenant Dan screams "Is that all you got?" at God during the shrimp boat storm in Forrest Gump and Fletcher Reede is Jim Carry's character in "Liar, Liar"

Mon Toutou.

Moms of sons, have you experienced moments with your son that were for lack of a better word - romantic?

I have noticed throughout the last two years that I have had moments with my P.R. that have been truly romantic. Sunday morning was unexpectedly one of them.

Joel had to work on Sunday which is not a typical thing in our house - weekends let alone Sundays are sacred but then again so are vacations and we have not taken one more than four days longs since our big Paris vacation three years ago.

(Six weeks for me and two for Joel in Paris really should last one about a decade but when you work as hard as Joel does you long to not only put your brush down but go without looking at it for at least a week.)

En tout cas we need every centime - when you are self employed there is no paid vacation unless you pay for it.

What a treat - I got to sleep in for the first time in months rolled out of bed a little before 9am and by 9:45 had bathed the babes and we were on our way to church with me doing my makeup at stop lights. Superwoman.

Aidan has been sitting with us in big church but as of last week he wanted to go in with the big kids (3-5) and they let him - well two thirds into the service his number flashed on the screen so I went down to rescue him. He just wanted his Momma. It was about 120 degrees in his room - I would not want to play in there either. Both of us were sweating like crazy by the time we made it back to "big church." He sat really good and quiet for about ten minutes but he started to sqirm and talk loudly about my "rouge" beads on my necklace so I thought we'd better go - pastor had only one more point to make anyways.

We go to church in a nearby town that has a beautiful historic square and I thought why go home? NASCAR was on cable so I would have had to listen to the radio anyways, it was about 90 degrees out but too close to naptime to head to the beach - we were going on a date.

Within minutes we were parking on a brick street on the square and window shopping. I remembered the hobby shop. What would be more fun for my little guy than to watch the model trains run in all their glory? He stood transfixed for a good ten minutes as we watched them go round and round thru their little towns, carnivals and mountains. We were admiring a red and black set when I realized we were watching a number 8 engine go round - then I look again. The whole dang train was Dale Junior. It fits the scale size than my Dad has been collecting for Aidan - a "mere" $269.00 for the set. I want it SO BAD!!! They have two left. Do you know how special that would be to have when in a few months our precious number Eight Bud car will be no longer? Ugh, I can't even thing about it. (Now accepting donations)

We still had the store to ourselves when I realized Aidan could probably handle the slot cars since there were no big boys around. I took a little grocery money and rented him a car, a handle and 15 minutes.

What a joy! The kid tore it up - did not crash once and the look in his eyes was pure elation. He is obsessed with driving (I now have to keep my cars doors locked in the driveway as I have more than once found him jerking the steering wheel back and forth, flashers flashing, window wipers going...). I found myself sitting in my dress on this filthy hobby shop floor staring at my son's face - we might as well have been riding in Cinderella's carriage for me.

When his 15 minutes were done the car came to a stop and Aidan instantly burst into tears. I quickly ordered another round. This time he lasted about 10 minutes and then wanted to go back and forth between watching the trains and racing and this time when our time was up we left for a little more window shopping. The second round was free - the owner saying that Aidan was better behaved than all the other boys that come in.

After a bit we walked to the middle of the square, classical music piped throughout the air Aidan kept saying, "I see it?" trying to find the source of the music, expecting lived musicians hiding somewhere in the park.

There was a bench with a few "ol lady" as Aidan would say and each time we passed them they would comment to each other on the beautiful little boy with his head full of curls. I must admit he was especially darling on Sunday. Clean blond curls, daddies colonge, navy and white striped shorts with his darling navy sandels and a red polo. Passing them again he made eye contact with them and hid his face, I was carrying him so I turned him around to say hello to them when one with more vigor then I ever thought she could muster one ol' lady JUMPED up and said, "I''l take your picture!" She whipped out a poleroid and snapped our photograph and that was when I about lost it. These moments alone with Aidan are so precious. Very soon my attention will be divided and sooner than I realize attention will be divided between friends, hobbies and finally adulthood. I won't be able to lift him into my arms or watch his eyes light up over a silly slot car forever. (Ok, now I am sobbing...)

Finally it was time to come home, we ate some lunch together and took our aftenoon naps; Joel came home just as we were waking up and we decided to go on a walk together.

Aidan loves to run around the block but this time half way around it began to sprinkle. There was no thunder so Joel did not freak out (after our tree getting stuck last year he is more cautious than EVER!) so there we were en famille running around the block, back home as fast as we could in pouring, pouring rain! Neighbors setting out their thirsty hanging baskets invited us to take shelter on their porch but we ran on. So romantic.

Finally to our own porch Joel escaped inside and Aidan and I played Legos and tried to empty out his wagon as sheets of the heaviest, most humid rain I have ever felt assailed us. We were giggling with delight.

Twenty minutes passed and the sky began to clear to which Aidan looked up and yelled to the heavens, "More!" but the following sprinkles did nothing to recapture the moment. The day was over and evening bedtime was fast approaching.

Whispering, "Bon soir mon Toutou." I knew I had fallen in love with my son a thousand times again that day. I wonder how I will contain myself when I am eighty, out in my garden and the heavens open and I remember this special Sunday with my son.

By the way...SOBBING again.

I have photos us us soaked out in the rain but I will put them on tonight - I need my nap now!

*&^#@ You Al...

Tell me this is not happening.

I am so pissed I don't even have the strength to turn the picture the proper way.

They said it was going to happen but I did not believe them. I have not left the house all day...it's like my worst nightmare come true. My gardening shoes sit forlornly in the corner, and my gloves? Well they are outside on the terrace under a pile of snow right where I left them the other day.

Give my humidity. Give me scalding heat. I can sleep without air conditioning 'til about 78 degrees (that should make that buffoon Al happy). Give me thunderstorms that flatten my snapdragons...

ANYTHING BUT MORE SNOW!!!

Forgotten (maybe) but not Gone!

Sorry all, the garden was calling. Every spare moment I have had in the last two weeks has been spent outside (thankfully).
Spring seems for the most part to have arrived. My nasty winter blues are now pale shades of pink as I wait with great anticipation for the hundreds of tulips to bloom that I planted last year. Sadly, the hundreds of crocuses that I planted did not survive - I think 3 bloomed. I waited all winter, telling everyone about the mini bulbs that I have planted throughout my yard. Perhaps they were not planted deep enough and the cold was just too much for them - I don't think it was those horrible rodent squirrels (who bring Aidan so much joy) because like a good gardener I planted garlic in each grouping...next year I will try Cayenne pepper. My grape hyacinth are coming up throughout the back yard though, so perhaps the crocuses were simply duds.
It has been so long I will give a brief update and since a lot of my readers are out of state friends and this is my primary source of communication let us pretend you just asked, "What's new with you?" and since this is my blog I will not simply say, "Nothing, how are you guys doing?" but instead I will give you a brief rundown of what else I have been doing instead of blogging....

-I made some changes to my living room. The sun is shining so I cleared off all the junk on my chandelier making it light and airy, I also moved some things around on the sun porch - just want the first floor to feel less cluttered and more clean lately.

-I weeded 8 yard barge bags of crap out of my gardens and I removed every border stone on my flagstone patio, cleaned underneath it and put it back, then I wire brushed all the flagstone - kind of like scrubbing your kitchen floor. It looks great.

-Put the fountain back together.

-Designed two knot gardens. One which will cost a fortune one which may be implemented this year in my snapdragon bed.

-I have been working out like a maniac. Whatever is on the horizon , a summer pregnancy or not, I still will have to get in a bathing suit in about 9 weeks. Yikes.

-I had a wonderful visit to the farm with Aidan, Mom and Aunt Julee, they have all blogged about it so far. We will all be heading back soon to work and have fun. My fun will be planting the garden that Gram has let me design - it is going to be out of this (cottage) world.

-I have fallen in love with a new program (Nic actually bought me the DVD's) "EXTRAS." It is so funny - there are no words. Love that BBC humor.

-We have found a church. Thankfully. The pastor and his wife came over for dinner a few weeks ago and we got to go over a list of what were looking for in a church! HELLO? After a couple decades of mega churches this is a really big deal to us. We even served together as a family last Saturday morning and it was amazing. Our hearts were thankful and we actually felt as though our presence made a difference. I will be auditioning for the worship team in the next few weeks. Can not wait to serve God with song again!

-Mom came over the other day and we intensely put our heads together drawing out tents, dance floors and table placement options for the nuptials of my beloved brother and his beloved Victoria.

-I am considering cutting my hair. Time will tell.

-Aidan is beyond amazing. He is so fricken' smart - I could bore you with 40 paragraphs. We may go take a Mom and Tot French lesson this morning in our consideration of taking classes together once a week. Let the homeschooling begin.

That's it in a nut shell. I promise to be more faithful and I know I have a lot of catching up to do on everyone else's posts...it is supposed to rain tomorrow. I should have the time!

Views into my Day (Part 1)

4:00-4:15 p.m. Slow dancing with Aidan to Ella Fitzgerald.

Fifteen minutes that will not soon be forgotten.
